Backstory

Born Ezri Lenskya, Codex spent his early childhood in a fairly typical Veena forest community with his mother and younger sister, Priska. He had a close relationship with both and people often mistook the siblings for twins due to their similar features and the unique bond the two seemed to share.Unfortunately, things all changed when Codex came of age. As was tradition for their community, Codex left their village to train to become a guardian of the forest as soon as it became apparent that he was male, and his happy care-free childhood came to an abrupt end. Lonely and mistreated, Codex only managed to make it a few seasons of training before he decided he'd had enough. He ran away, leaving his forest home for good and vowed never to return.Not yet an adult, and not fully trained in the ways of the Vii forest guardians, Codex immediately struggled to take care of himself after leaving the protection of the forest. Luckily, he was found by a group of adventurers who took him in not long after. He spent the rest of his early years with the eccentric inventor --the brains behind the operation-- and his equally brilliant daughter, a quiet, pretty girl, with long blonde curls named Alice.Unfortunately, a few years later, during an exploratory expedition gone wrong, the trio is separated when the ship they had been traveling on is held hostage by pirates. Those that were deemed fit enough were immediately put to work on the ship, while the rest of the prisoners were dumped at the nearest port--their justification being that they were pirates, not murderers.After a few--very unpleasant-- seasons, Codex manages to successfully increase his rank from 'hostage' to 'crew mate' and finds that a part of him actually enjoys the theif life. Not the fighting, he still hates that--though he does learn to hold his own with a dagger-- but the mental game of it. He learns that he is quite good at it and ends up running several very successful cons in various ports throughout Eorzea.It isn't until a few years later, after a simple pick-pocketing scam gone wrong, he is reunited with (held at gunpoint by) the girl mechanic from his past; she was not left "safe on shore" as he had been lead to believe, but instead had become a machinist for a thieves' guild in order to survive after the death of her father.
She convinces him to ditch the petty thievery of the pirate life and join her and her group --of what are essentially professional con-artists-- for some "real fun".
